How to search UK IT jobs more effectively

Practical filters, keywords, and habits that help technology candidates find better-matched roles faster.

Start with specialism, not job title alone

IT hiring uses many overlapping titles. Searching only for “developer” can miss strong roles labelled engineer, consultant, or analyst. On WEB JOBS, combine a specialism filter (for example software development, DevOps, data, or cybersecurity) with a short keyword so results stay relevant without being too narrow.

If you are open to adjacent roles, run two searches: one for your current title and one for the next step you want. Save the stronger listings and compare salary, location, and contract type before applying.

Use location and work arrangement deliberately

Remote, hybrid, and onsite expectations vary widely in UK tech hiring. If you need remote-first work, say so in keywords or filter for remote-friendly listings. If you can travel to a hub city a few days a week, hybrid roles often widen your options and salary range.

Be realistic about commute time. A role that looks perfect on paper can fail quickly if the onsite pattern does not fit your week.

Check salary and IR35 signals early

Where salary is shown, use it as a first pass, not the whole decision. Some listings omit pay until later in the process. For contract roles, look for IR35 status and day-rate clarity before investing time in a long application process.

Featured listings on WEB JOBS are highlighted because recruiters have promoted them — useful when you want visibility into roles that agencies are actively pushing.
