Writing clearer IT job adverts

Checklist for recruiters and hiring managers who want tech candidates to understand the role quickly.

5 min read · Updated 16 July 2026

Lead with outcomes and stack

Strong IT adverts open with what the person will build or improve, then list the core stack. Avoid long internal jargon before the candidate knows the problem. Include must-have skills separately from nice-to-haves so experienced people can self-select honestly.

Be specific on pay and arrangement

Salary bands and day rates reduce wasted applications. State remote, hybrid, or onsite clearly, and include IR35 status for contracts. Candidates compare many roles quickly — clarity wins replies.

Make the next step obvious

Use a working apply URL and, where useful, a company or agency website. On WEB JOBS featured listings, both can be shown on the job page so candidates know exactly how to respond.

General information only — not legal, tax, or financial advice. For employment rights and IR35 rules, check ACAS and GOV.UK / HMRC guidance linked from our resources page.
